SHHT…TALES OF THE UNDERGROUND, A MAGICAL TRIP INTO THE SUBCONSCIOUSNESS OF BRUSSELS

Thanks to all the participants for joining us during the last January 25th during the Nightscapes Sessions – By the Ghost of the River. This night trip was conceptually organized around the Vaulting of the River Senne in the XIX century that together with the construction of the North-South Railway Jonction in the XX Century represent the most important underground episodes of the history of Brussels: Both mega infrastructural operations changed completely the urban configuration of the center of Brussels, they both carried out demolitions of entire neighborhoods and they both provided the platform for a new image for the city. Shht#2 Underground is tackling this issue through three articles by authors Adrian Hill, Laura Vescina, Charles Bricman, Stephane Damsin, Sedaile Mejias and Diego Luna. During this experimental promenade we use different formats of performing and visual arts to provide a new way to experience two very local neighborhoods (quite unexplored by Brussels visitors), built above a river long forgotten. Here the complete program of the evening:

This night promenade wouldn´t have been possible without the kind support and collaboration of

Nightscapes, Recyclart, BUUR, Modell’o Printshop, Curo Hall, Cultureghem, BOB 361, ZSenne, BXL Swings in the Cracks and Expart.

SHHT – VIDEO CONTEST

DEADLINE : 18th january 2014

Do you know a hidden and wonderful underground site? Do you care about something special that happens under our feet?

Send us your short video (max length 90sec) : it could become one of the video that will be shown at the Gare du Congress in Bruxelles during next Shht event in january 2014.

Videos could be also shown in other future events around Shht2 Underground as well as in the website.

Underground: literally under the earth, but often in a figurative sense – something embedded, that goes unnoticed, or simply placed outside the established culture, even subversive. Our relationship with the bowels of our planet has deep roots. Biblical culture claims the man was created out of the mud, where we return after death by being buried. But there are plenty of activities that keep alive the world underground: extracting energy in the form of oil, gas or even geothermal heat; searching for materials in huge mines so similar to micro urban systems with streets, offices, dining halls and dormitories. Sometimes we live an entire life underground to protected ourselves from a hostile climate, or just for a while in order to study the behavior of our body when deprived of the day-night alternation. We move through tunnels, common shortcuts in our daily life. For reasons of convenience and hygiene, even our waste moves underground. Because land isolates; it isolates from traffic, pollution, dirt and excrement, long before the rationalist dream. Underground is also a safe place for illegal activities and gambling clubs, as well as it has been refuge for the persecuted religious congregations. Sometimes underground means hidden. We place there our cars in parking garages, our military secrets as well as some items having their resting place at the basement of our houses. Underground also means protection. Protection from the not always friendly shafts of sunlight. Protection for our valuables in secret and fascinating bank vaults. Protection during a conflict in resistant bunkers hard to reach. Underground is also synonymous with research. Fairy tale treasures are to be found underground, hidden and protected. Many research centers are underground. We investigate the center of the planet as much as we explore the universe.

Hiding, protecting, exploring, moving and take refuge are just words to describe a world unknown that is a intimate part of us.

SHHT SUPPORTS  ”NO DEMOLITION” GROUP IN LIMASSOL (CYPRUS):

The aim of the group “NO DEMOLITION” is to unite anyone who disagrees with the demolition of the first example of Social Housing built in Limassol in 1948. A great part of the complex has already been demolished over the past few years. The Group now wants to stand up and prevent cancelling of this important part of our city forever. The complex of housing was designed after the WWII for poor people that were moving from the surrounding villages into the city in very rough conditions, to work in the industries nearby the Limassol port. The concept of the these houses was to offer an independent, respectful and hygienic space for living equally and to everyone in need. It is worth mentioning that the project has not only respected the budget approved at the time, but it has also saved money which was then used to build other housing, establishing in this way the importance of the well living and being. The complex offered homes to over 250 people at the time. “NO DEMOLITION” envisions to give life back to these houses and to give houses back to the people of Limassol, in any way possible, conserving all the layers of history that have shaped our city, during past and for the future.
